Concert Review: MGMT at The Tabernacle 11.02.2010

This concert turned out to be one of the ones that I was most excited to see. Since this album had been and important soundtrack of my period in Mexico City. I used to hear them while walking in La Condesa and Polanco. MGMT is huge is latinamerica and as a friend of mine would say: mainstream alternative. Well that I guess is the best term to define this band right now. A lot of young kids showed up to the concert and it was packed. The heat was tolerable since last time I was there I ended sweat wet. Anyway MGMT came to the stage and they seem to be your average normal guys. When they started playing the sound was good but most of their new songs were not recognizable to people. The biggest moments of the concert were when they played Electric Feel and Kids. Of course the main songs were the ones that powered people up to dance and jump, but also slow songs have some sort attention catching. Thats what made me pay close attention to them. When they create their atmosphere and stick it for a while is when you recognize what these kids are actually like. Strong abstract sounds, guitar and synthetizers mixed together and loud vocals, that is what the main core of MGMT is.

On my own perspective this band started a new movement in music and visuals including his album cover and his Electric Feel video. That immediatly infuenced any person realated to creative things: fashion designers, photographers, copywriters and so on. They sky rocketed with originality. But sad to say I guess these kids didn't know how to handle that and became victims of their own success. The concert playlist was not very well put together. Ups and Downs all the time, High beat then to Low beat, then to different abstract sounds, then to Electric Feel, then to down music again. I guess they still don't know how to put a show together or maybe their audience knows them so well that its ok for them and that's what they like of it.

I'm still glad I got a chance to see them live. Hopefully as the band matures a little bit more they will find their own core and reach different levels of who they are as they do in their first album.
